About

The Bench was founded by Ellys and Mark in 2022. Both coming from creative backgrounds, their vision was to establish a workshop where like-minded makers could feel comfortable, included and supported. They wanted to create a warm, welcoming environment for makers to expand their skills and grow their businesses, while most importantly enjoying what they do.

“As makers ourselves we want to support other makers where we can. We understand how difficult it can be running your own business, finding workshop space and generally juggling what life can sometimes throw at you. If we can support other makers while on our own creative journeys then we feel we have succeeded.”

Ellys May Woods

After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 2018 with my Silversmithing & Jewellery degree, I took part in various residencies and scholarships throughout the UK. I now run my own small business Ellys May Jewellery. I absolutely love working with precious metals and also sharing the skills I’ve been lucky enough to be passed on from experts in the industry.

A few of my favourite things: Our family dogs, practicing yoga & the rare sunshine in Glasgow!

Mark Allan

I re-trained in Furniture Craftsmanship and Design after completing my degree in Computer Animation Arts and I’ve never looked back! I worked for a cabinet maker for 8 years before starting my own joinery business in 2025.

A few of my favourite things: My morning coffee, terrible jokes & Lindt Lindor chocolate.
